Tasting 101: Alberta Crude Oatmeal Stout

Alberta Crude pours thick and black, like Texas Tea, with not much head. It has low carbonation, which might explain why what little head dissipates quickly. The nose is heavy with licorice, plus it has the typical dark malt notes of coffee and chocolate. The palate is smooth, clean, with a lingering tarry, licorice finish. It is difficult to estimate the IBU's in full-bodied stouts, but there is definitely enough bitterness to provide balance. This is a great effort, and Alberta Crude could be the best name for a stout, ever. (Reviewed by Craig Pinhey - Winter '09/10 Issue: Beer Produced by Wild Rose Brewery)
